Three Sonic Screwdrivers by Carthoris Three Sonic Screwdrivers by Carthoris
The one on the right's a store-bought New Series; the others are ones I've made: An aluminum one in the middle (for a costuming friend) and two out of bronze. One is a solid piece, the other one slides. Just like on TV! :)

NO, I'm NOT selling any of these! They're all spoken for, and currently I'm not making any others.

Sorry! :)

What kind of parts did you use to make these? I'm looking into making a custom screwdriver and am looking for a starting point

Aluminum was the easiest to find at my old work; although, I did scrounge up some brass for the other two. I figured out a way to slide the upper portion as well. :)

For the ring, the center is the insert from a roll or printer paper (small size). These might help for size:

On the print for the Tech Manual, change the Centimetres to Millimetres. :)

Ok cool thanks! Ok so did you have to construct the parts much or were most of them fairly similar in the final result as when you found then?

Sorry about the lag. :)

I had to turn all of them, except for the interior of the ring; tried tio make the three-pronged centre, but it was too much of a hassle. :)

ahhh, too bad you're not offering to make these on commission. an all brass slider Sonic would be a sweet piece ^_^

still! excellent work! the expolded view of the all Bronze sonic you posted later is really great! i like how you did the center core shaft in all one piece. very good work!

I think I may have found enough scrap for one! :)
It'll be a while, though, as I have to wait for the boss to not be at work first.

So....know anyone who might want it...?

Not at the moment; the ones pictured are already taken (I don't even have one for myself!).

But, when I do start making more, you've got first shot if you like (because, no one else's asked me!) :D

Guess what? :)

While scrounging around at work today, I think I've found enough bronze pieces to make one more! :) Currently, I'm doing one I owe someone, but when I get that finished, I can start on this one! It won't slide, though, if that's OK. :)

Let me know if you're interested. :D

Maybe you should let the ignorant New Series fans (who were unaware of an Original Series of Doctor Who until now) know that the Sonic Screwdrivers that you made are from Classic Who, not the rubbish New Series. :XD:

Awesome job, btw!! How did you make them??!?

Thanks. :)

Well, it helps when you work in a machine shop; the parts are just scrap we had laying about. I used measurements from the 'Doctor Who Technical Manual', and took a lot of lunch hours (and the boss being away! :D ) to work on them.

I'm looking for more scrap, as I *Need* to make more! :D

Well, unfortunately, those are already taken.

But, since you're the first to ask me since then, you're on the top of the list for when I make more. :)

(And, yes, more are planned! I think I've found half of the stuff I need for another one. It's yours, when I get it done. Might be in a couple weeks, as I have to do it at lunch.)

Oh, you're making them sliding now, too? Is there a limit to your awesome? Next they'll be fully functional too! Hahahahaha. I still love mine--it was a hit at ComicCon, where I loaned it to our Fourth Doctor (since I was the Second Doctor I used a different device for my sonic screwdriver). In the end, we all had sonic screwdrivers, so that was very nice and handy. :D

Is the one in the middle the one you made me, or is that another? :D You're a sonic screwdriver making machine!

Yep, the middle one's yours. :)

And, yes, now that I've figured out the sliding bit, I'm itching to make another slider.

Hmmm....I wonder who I could give *that* one to, once I get one done...

Hahahaha. Well, I wouldn't say no, but I certainly don't need *two*. So I could return that one (you could sell it, you know!), or pass it on to another worthy cotumer.

I do have to say though, I think the July heat was too much for those little black rubber bits, as one of them peeled right off. :(

:( Damn the heat! CURSE IT!!!!!!!!

....sorry......

Well, a *new* one will be a little down the line, as I have to scrounge the stuff needed, first. But, you'll still have first refusal, when I do get it done.

And yeah, stupid heat. I tried to fix it, but it was like, bent out of shape, hahahahaha. It still looks great.

Nope. A solid piece of aluminum. Lightweight and still solid-feeling (just what my friend needed for a competition. I should ask them how they did...)

Well, all you need is a piece of aluminum, a lathe, and the blueprint from the Doctor Who Technical Manual.

Throw in a little patience, and VOILA! Instand Sonic! :D

Or, if *someone* can dig up enough extra aluminum, they *might* be able to do it....

Thanks. :)

I used the plan in the Technical Manual that came out years ago; not 100% accurate, but good enough for me. :)

I scrounged some spare aluminum & bronze from my work (machine shop), and worked on them when I could; usually lunch, as the boss doesn't really like it when you work on ';private stuff' when you're on the clock. Don't know why... :D

The hardest part was the ring and the 'bullet'. Not to make, but to match up so that they were centered. Repeated test fitting was crucial, as I didn't want it to end up too low or too high inside the ring.

The slider was a little fun, as I had to make it in several pieces and a spring (three, not counting the ring & bullet). I've a picture of it before assembly; I'll put it up in a seperate post.

Thanks for the interest! :) (And sorry if the explanation was somewhat boring! :D)
